HAIR Short, straight blond
EYES Gold; Black (When thirsty)
FEATURE His sculpted face, usually kept in a thoughtful expression
overall Tall and described in a fairly smooth manner as more handsome than any model. He has golden eyes, the result of his diet, and has collar length blond hair. He has a slender but fairly muscular build and delicate looking hands. When not wearing his hospital coat with a collared shirt, tie and slacks he is wearing various other forms of formalized casual clothing. His hair naturally takes a form of what one might consider to take a great deal of money to keep well styled. It is often pulled back and to the sides out of his face.
His face is sculptured and framed perfectly. He has a perfect straight nose, thin but defined eyebrows, and full reddish lips. Contrast to his golden eyes, he has dark circles under his eyes that often have him described as tired looking though that often can be attributed to his career choice. His posture is usually welcoming and inviting, giving off a friendly air that he uses to comfort his patients. Despite the English accent he developed in his youth he speaks with a perfect American accent. He is like all other vampires, pale in complexion.

OVERALL Carlisle is above all else most well known for his exceptional compassion. He loves every person he meets equally with even greater love for his wife and children. He believes everyone deserves the chance to prove amend themselves. He has a strong sense of self control which allows him to work in even the most dire of medical situations. Having spent many years refraining from human blood Carlisle hardly notices the scent of human blood and is able to focus on other more important parts of his personality.
Born in the sixteen hundreds he is very elegant and formal in nature and goes about things in calm and controlled fashion. His nature is often expressed in his fashion when he is not working. Next to his compassion and self control is his patience and thoughtful mannerism. He prefers to wait and think over a response before jumping right into it. He believes that a well thought out answer is far more considerate than a hasty one. His expression is often thoughtful and calm, showing consideration for the speech of others, his preference to let others be heard before giving his opinion.
Carlisle is of the mind that words should be used to solve a quandary before actions. He prefers to refrain from violence and will do whatever he can to keep things peaceable even move his family to a new location in the most dire of situations. He is also very generous, offering refuge to Alice and Jasper is a simple example of this despite the fact he knew that Jasper was still struggling with the scent of human blood. This reflects on his apparent drive to be family oriented. He offers his help as a doctor to any and all who need it regardless of who they are.

HISTORY Carlisle Emerson Cullen was born on August the 17th in the year 1640 to an Anglican Pastor, Gresham and his wife Abigail. His mother died during his birth and he was raised from infancy by his dramatically religious father, in the city of London, England. The period was wracked with unrest as it was a time of religious and political turmoil. His father was a radical man, leading groups of people to hunt what he proclaimed to be werewolves, witches and vampires, though killed several innocents in the process. He was succeeded by Carlisle as he ailed who took over the acts of justice against evil and sin, but was not quite as comfortable with the idea of killing innocents as his father.
He was, however, smart enough to find a coven of actual vampires taking refuge in the sewers of London. The raid did not last long and during the chaos Carlisle was left injured and bleeding by one of the vampires he’d sought to eradicate. Doing what he felt was the intelligent thing to do knowing his father would likely kill him, he forced himself into potato cellar and slowly he underwent his almost unbearable transformation, emerging three days later as the very creature he’d hunted. He was appalled by what he’d become, considering himself a monster and out of horror attempted to end his new life repeatedly. When starvation failed he tried drowning and when that failed as well he finally gave up following failed leaps from cliff tops. He had become far to thirsty to harbor any other thought.
Fleeing to the wilderness Carlisle holed himself up in a cave, feeding finally on deer that were passing by. It was then that he found the source of blood that he would focus his diet on, of the knowledge that their blood would also sustain him. A diet he found to be far more humane than murder. With his discovery he was able to move on with his thoughts and begin to let his new life take shape. For two centuries, spent wandering the wilderness and streets of several cities, Carlisle perfected a resistance to the craze brought on by the scent of human blood. He studied under the cover of darkness in the arts, especially that of medicine, eventually becoming a remarkable and talented doctor. He chose to use his skills and abilities not to harm others but instead to help them in every way he could, even if at times it was futile.
During his continued studies he made his way to Italy where he sought to learn new methods. This was around the time he met the ancient and powerful coven of vampires known as the Volturi, led by Aro, Marcus and Caius. What he found most fascinating about the Volturi was their elegance, class and educated manner, a drastic contrast from the vampires he’d encountered in the sewers of London. Aro, whom he had become closest to, was curious about his dietary choices and on several occasions attempted to convert Carlisle back to his primary food source of human blood. On one occasion Aro resorted to tossing a still living human, bleeding profusely, onto the floor outside the library where Carlisle was studying. Carlisle resisted easily, aware that it was a test of his self control, and soon came to understand Aro’s blatant disregard for human life and took his leave of the Volturi for the New World.
Once there Carlisle moved about the country from hospital to hospital treating ailing patients wherever he could, constantly increasing the expanse of his trade. During this time he met a young adolescent Esme and treated her for a broken leg before leaving town because of suspicion of his age. He soon found himself working evening shifts at a hospital in Chicago during the Spanish Influenza epidemic. He watched several of his patients die, including Edward Masen Sr. A short time later the man’s wife and son came under Carlisle’s care, where the woman, Elizabeth, begged Carlisle to save her sons life using any means within his power. After she’d passed Carlisle turned to the young Edward Cullen and, with consideration of his lonely life and awareness of the fact that Edward now too had no other family left, changed him.
He took Edward as his companion and promptly left the city in search of a new home. They eventually settled in Wisconsin in 1921 where Carlisle came face to face with Esme once more, however this time under far graver circumstances than a simple fracture. The woman, having lost her child had attempted suicide and out of some miracle survived. Carlisle changed her as she lay dying, somehow compelled to save her possibly because of their interaction in the past. It was not long after, with the help of numerous incidents with nurse flirting, that Carlisle and Esme fell in love and were wed. Together as a small family they moved on from Wisconsin and travelled once more, happening once more upon a human that Carlisle felt compelled to save. That person was Rosalie Hale, a woman who’d been attacked and left for dead by vile men, one whom called himself her fiance.
Carlisle had in part hoped that Rosalie would become a love interest for Edward, but when she did not Carlisle did not press the matter. He was soon faced with another decision when Rosalie brought a near-dead Emmett whom she’d found hunting and requested Carlisle change for her. He did as she asked, seeing the love for him in his daughter’s eyes and accepted the young male vampire into his coven before setting forth once more into the same motion of finding a new place to live, often due to mishaps in his family’s adaptation to their ‘vegetarian diet’ as he called it. In the year 1950 Carlisle and his family were brought face to face with two more prospective members the growing coven, Alice and Jasper. After this addition Carlisle took to referring to his family officially as the Olympic Coven, though Jasper and Rosalie used the surname Hale.
Some time before meeting Alice and Jasper, while Carlisle, Esme, Edward, Rosalie and Emmett were living in a town known as Forks, Washington, the coven made a treaty with the Quileute tribe and it’s then leader Ephraim Black, a shape-shifter. The Cullens returned to Forks following addition of Alice and Jasper looking to settle in one place for a time after spending a good few years in Alaska with another Vegetarian coven, the Denalis. For two years Carlisle worked at Forks General Hospital and the Cullens lived in peace and quiet in the small town of Forks, until a new girl moved into town and grasped the attention of many of the town’s citizens, including Edward.
