Bella entered the cafeteria after her last class for that half of the school day. As soon as she stepped into the room, her eyes instantly roamed toward the table where the Cullen family are always seated. It was just something that she couldn't stop herself from doing. Her chocolate brown eyes raked across the beautifully stunning group of five adopted siblings. Rosalie first with her long glossy blond hair. The female could become a well paid professional model without any effort. Actually they all could. Emmett was huge and imposing but something about him seemed like he could possibly be a softy underneath but that was just her speculation.
Next came the tall and lean Jasper. He did seem to look like he might be under some sort of personal struggle as he sat closely to the short haired pixie like Alice girl. The aura of this girl just radiated cheerfulness. Was she always like that? Bella wasn't sure how she could always be so happy. Maybe one of these days she would get to ask her that very question. The last one that her eyes stopped on, longer than the others were Edward. Instantly her breathing stopped as she realized that he was looking at her too. He looked like he was contemplating something silently as he looked at her.
Feeling a heat flush her cheeks, Bella quickly looked down, letting her hair fall and curtain her face from the intense stare from the boy that she just couldn't stop thinking about. Silently Bella kicked herself. "Ugh that's just great Bella. Make it obvious that you are staring at them!" She shook her head and then sighed, trying to make herself look busy now with the untouched food on her lunch tray. Bella couldn't help but wonder if he was still looking at her but didn't dare to look just yet.

Edward sat quietly on his seat at the edge of the "Cullen Table" as some of the students have labeled it as, food untouched as he listened to the thoughts of the students around him, trying to pinpoint the location of the new girl, Bella. As much as he hated going through the thoughts of the boys that populated the school, he had no other option as he found himself unable to read Bella's mind for some unknown reason, it was really frustrating to say the least.
His search was ended when the thoughts of a pair of boys revealed her arrival to the cafeteria, his eyes instantly darted towards her location, watching her every move as she headed towards the table her friends gathered at. Why was he so tempted by her blood? It made no sense, he had been just fine for the last 87 years and suddenly this girl just arrives and makes him feel like a newborn all over again. He tried to reach out for her mind, intent on getting at least a word...nothing, it made him wonder what she was thinking about. That's when her stare came to rest upon him, creating a brief connection between the two.
The connection was broken a moment later by her though as she quickly averted his gaze, shifting her own stare to the tray of untouched food that rested before her. The only thing now that he could do was to stare at the curtain of hair that covered her face. He couldn't help but to form a frown on his otherwise perfect features, it was just too frustrating.

It was obvious by the feeling that she was continuing to get, that Edward's eyes were still very much focused on her. Even though, just that thought made her have a little trouble breathing. Why was that? It's not like she was insanely attractive like his siblings or even moderately attractive like Jessica and a couple other girls in the entire school. So why does it seem like this amazingly gorgeous and out of reach guy seemed to be focused on her too? It was odd.
A part of her just wanted to give up and look over at the table once again to see what was happening but another part of her was fighting that urge as hard as it could. Trying to occupy herself with something else, Bella began fumbling with the sandwich that she had on her tray by picking at the bread. It worked all of a couple of seconds before her thoughts once again returned with a determined mind to Edward again. Without having too much control over it, Bella's hand reached up and brushed her long dark hair away from her face, tucking it behind her ear. Her eyes automatically made her way to look in the direction of the Cullen's table - easily finding Edward.
It was amazing just how the sight of him caused her breath to hitch and stop half the time and her heart pound in her chest like it might try to escape her body, and beat itself all the way over to lay at this God's feet. The flush came back quickly to her cheeks as Bella's eyes once again met the darker golden color of Edward's. This time though, she was transfixed and unable to immediately look away from him. So, they stared at each other from across the space of their lunch tables. Bella wondered what the expression on his face meant. There was just no way for her to tell for sure. It hinted at, confusion but possibly even irritation?

Edward shifted his attention momentarily towards the minds of the people that surrounded Bella, those being her "friends" as they liked to call themselves. First he went to Jessica Stanley's, as usual, her mind was filled with the thought of shopping, Mike Newton...his hair and why both himself and Mike ignored her and placed all their attention on 'plain' Isabella Swan. "How vain." He thought to himself, shaking his head and proceeding with the next mind...Mister Newton. The idea was aborted the moment he peered into his mind though, Mike plus Bella, plus Jessica, not a mental image he wanted to have in his mind, ever.
"Bad mental image, bad mental image!" He thought, deciding to return his attention to Bella. He shifted his gaze back towards her, it was like she was a magnet and he was a piece of metal, he just felt attracted towards her. Everything about her made him want to cross the room and drain her from that mouth watering blood of hers, but he was better than that, or at least he needed to prove his family that he was better than that. The monster inside him thought otherwise though, he was really having a hard time resisting the urge to just execute his plan, and let the beast inside take over his body, it would be so easy. But no, he had to think about his siblings too, if he got them exposed then they would be at risk and he wouldn't do that to them.
It took every ounce of strength from him to refrain from moving as he saw her remove the curtain of hair that covered her face, revealing once more that pair of chocolate orbs that had come to be his fixation. They mixed with his golden-colored eyes to create yet another connection between the pair, making his mouth fill with venom in the process, venom which he forced himself to swallow. She was indeed like a drug to him, her scent, her looks, everything...How ironic, a fragile human luring a vampire in, talk about ultimate predator. He considered standing up and approaching her but he wouldn't risk it, he was doing fine so far with controlling himself and he wouldn't fail now.

A small frown formed on Bella's face as the connection between herself and Edward's eyes were broken as he turned away and began looking off in various directions. To her it looked like he might be looking at several of her friends but she couldn't be one hundred percent certain. Bella took a deep sigh and shook her head. Mentally she was kicking herself for allowing a guy to have this much control over her. The worst part was that HE didn't even seem to like HER at all!
Bella knew that it was wishful thinking that he might even like her a little bit. "It's not even possible." She said out loud but lowly to herself. At the same time, Bella looked up and back over at Edward and their eyes met once again. It was almost like she could feel the electricity flowing between them and that confused the heck out of her. As they continued looking at one another, a new emotion crossed his features and this time Bella was able to figure it out. "He looks ravenous all of the sudden." Bella thought to herself as her eyes searched his face over.
That was even more perplexing than the two emotions of earlier. If he was hungry, he had a whole tray of untouched food that he could be eating but then another thought occurred to her. "Maybe he's not even looking at me though." Bella broke the gaze between them and casually looked behind her and then around her to see if perhaps he was staring at someone else. It didn't appear so though. When Bella looked back to Edward, he once again seemed to be deep in thought. She stared at him for several more seconds between checking the clock on the wall to see how long before lunch was over.

Edward held his gaze for some moments, glaring holes at the spot Bella was sitting at. He hated her, not because she was bad or anything, but because she made him want to kill everyone inside that room and send all his self control out of the window. He sighed, if Carlisle could see him he would be disappointed, it was one thing that he killed all those men before, but they were criminals and so they deserved no mercy or forgiveness, but her? she was just a normal girl. He broke their connection again, taking a hold of his food tray and decided to empty it at the closest trash can, standing up and heading towards the food line to gather different food. He didn't need food, hell, the sensation of eating it was like eating dirt ever since he was a vampire, but he had to keep up his act and he needed to occupy his mind with something.
Once in the food line he let himself inhale some air, confident that the food would mask her scent. It worked, filling him with relief now that he could breathe without worries. He picked up some salad and began to uncomfortably swallow it. "It's for your own good Edward, you don't want to let the monster win, you must do this." He told himself before taking the fork to his mouth. The taste was nauseous, but he managed to swallow it, frowning as he did. Sometimes he wondered why he cared, maybe his place was with the Volturi, maybe he just had to give in to his instincts and accept the monster inside. It certainly seemed like the easiest thing to do.

The look on Edward's face was so intense. Intense enough to make her feel a wee bit scared. Honestly if looks could kill, Bella knew that she would be dead right now. The glare made her feel uncomfortable, self concious and angry. She couldn't think of anything that she might have done already that could cause him to dislike her. Perhaps her staring at him had finally annoyed him to the point where he didn't like her now? Bella sighed and frowned. She finally tore her gaze away from him and looked back down at her tray of food. She didn't eat meat so she began picking the meat off of the sandwich that was on her tray. Of course she hadn't planned on eating anything at the moment either. Honestly she wasn't even sure of why she had picked the tray up anyway.
Out of the corner of her eye, Bella saw movement at table Edward and his siblings were sitting at but she forced herself not to look up and openly watch him. Instead she watched him as long as she could and determined that he was going to the trash can. He dumped his food but instead of leaving or going back to the table right away, he went to the counter and gathered more food. Feeling a little brave on shaky knees, Bella got to her feet and emptied her tray into the trash can too. Turning around, she took a deep breath and moved towards the food counter. Instead of going to the exact spot he was in, Bella instead went to the fruit and veggie section and began searching through them for a good apple specimen. She was acutely aware of Edward being not too far from herself but she didn't say anything to him even though she wanted to ask him why he keeps looking at her like he wants to kill her.

Edward's attempts at eating were proving to be effective as his mind was too busy with the process of grossing him out to let him think about Bella and her oh so tempting blood. Watching the odd stares that he was receiving from the other students, he just frowned and shrugged them off, they would never understand the pain he was going through. Not only was he alone and without any sort of company unlike his siblings whom had their significant others, but also now he had to deal with the constant temptation of resisting this girls blood that called out for him, if only there was a spot on another class to stay away from her, that would be the best for both.
Fate, or whatever higher power however did not want that to happen and so, Bella casually happened to walk near him, heading towards the fruits and veggie section some meters away from him, maybe just a little chat wouldn't affect him...And so, against his instinct he approached her, he just begged god or whoever was up there to give him the strength to resist his urges and perhaps let it clear that it would be bad for her to be around him. He waited for some moments, watching her search for whatever fruit she might be looking for before clearing his throat. "Hey." It didn't have to be anything fancy, a simple hey would suffice to break the ice between them or so he hoped.

Bella was so focused on not allowing herself to speak to Edward and trying to distract herself with finding an apple, that when HE actually spoke to her, it made her jump. So much in fact, she almost knocked over the whole selection of apples with her hand. Luckily she stopped several from spilling over into the floor but ended up dropping the apple that she had picked out for herself. She watched as it slipped out of her hand and went crashing to the floor. Her attention was drawn away from the apples as she caught the glimpse of whiteness beside of her. So her eyes darted up and looked directly into the face of Edward. Her mouth hung open for several moments as she struggled to get the words out.
Bella quickly cleared her throat because she didn't want to look like a complete idiot. More so than she probably already did. Looking into his eyes made her completely forget about the apple she had been trying to retrieve. His voice was like an unknown version of music to her ears. It was beautiful to her. Just as beautiful as he was. Again, Bella realized that she was staring and not saying anything back to him. So she shook her head, to clear the fog and finally spoke. "Hello." She simply said back. What else could she say? "How about, you are the most beautiful creature I have ever laid my eyes on!" Yea right! Like that wouldn't be creepy!." Bella said to herself.

Edward remained silent as Bella knocked the apples to the side because of his interruption. He watched almost in slow motion as one of them dropped to the ground, it would be so easy to catch it, but then again, he was supposed to be normal and normal people didn't have such reflexes. Lowering himself to a crouch, he took a hold of the bright fruit that laid at his feet, picking it up and giving it back to her. He inwardly chuckled as he saw her shocked expression, it was a somewhat normal reaction, considering how vampires were supposed to be stunning after all.
"You, eh, dropped this." He told her with a relaxed expression. He may look like that in the exterior, but deep inside he was forcing himself not to attack her. "I'm sorry for being so rude, I just have a hard time figuring you out and it frustrates me." He explained to her with sincerity, it was partially the truth but he also couldn't say. "Hey Bella, we can't be close to each other or be friends cause I may drain your blood until you are dry, cause I'm a vampire!" No, that would just make him look crazy...or maybe she would actually believe it and then he would have to kill her. He stared into those chocolate pools she had for eyes, instantly feeling bad as he saw himself reflected on them, oh how many times his image had been the last thing to be reflected on the eyes of killers, robbers and other criminals as he took their lives, it was a thought that depressed him as it made him realize just how big of a monster he was.

Bella thought to herself, "Great. Now not only does he think you are a weird stalker but also he knows that you are clumsy to boot. Just perfect." She watched as the apple rolled on the floor and came to stop at his feet. Edward seemed to be watching that as well. She watched as he leaned down and picked it up from the floor and held it out to her. "Thanks." Bella mumbled as she reached out and took the apple quickly from him. "Sorry. I wasn't intentionally trying to throw fruit at you. You just startled me is all." She quickly reassured him.
Upon hearing his next comment, Bella raised her eyebrow in question at him. "Figuring me out?" She questioned him. Tilting her head a bit to the side, she looked up at him, still holding the apple in her hand, all the other fruit that was knocked out of place or scattered was completely forgotten. Bella shook her head at hearing how it frustrated him. "Well that would explain the frustrated expression from earlier then." The words slipped out before she even realized she had been thinking them and she instantly regretted it because it means she just owned up to staring at him ever since lunch began. Bella then sighed, seeing him staring at her now with such intensity. "I'm sorry I am frustrating you so. I'll try harder not to do that from now on."

Listening to her explain about how she didn't mean to throw the apple at him made him chuckle, it's not that he was making fun of her or anything, it was just funny to hear her apologize for something that she didn't mean to do. "It's alright, it was my fault for surprising you like that." He assured her, shrugging a little as if it was nothing. "Yeah, I usually have an easy time figuring people out, something similar to reading a book. But with you...I cannot seem to decipher you." He pursed his lips together, forming a light frown across his face.
He raised an eyebrow when she spoke about his earlier frustrated expression. So she had been watching him? Interesting discovery, he would need to keep that in mind next time he stared at her. "Well, I apologize for that, it won't happen again." He told her as she sighed, chuckling again after she spoke. "So I tell you that I am frustrated because I cannot figure you out and you apologize? You're just incredible." She was indeed incredible, other people would have just ignored that or would have reacted in a negative way, but Bella? She just says I'm sorry.

"Perhaps you should make some noise or something when you wake. You know? Let people know that you are actually there?" Bella said a little softly as she looked up and met his eyes again. Instantly her train of thought was thrown off and she forgot how to speak or to even think. So that ended up causing her to just stare at him for several more seconds without speaking. Then he spoke once again and thoughts filled her head. "You are usually good at reading people but not me? Why is that?" She asked him, genuinely interested.
As she stood there listening to him speak, she found herself getting completely lost in his voice. It had sort of a hypnotic quality to it. Or it might have just been her, she wasn't exactly sure which. Either way though, his voice just kept her captivated, wanting to hear more of it. It didn't really matter what he was actually saying, just as long as he kept speaking. His laugh at her apologizing brought her back to reality as it is. She frowned at him. Apologizing wasn't a bad thing but apparently he was finding it funny that she did it and that confused her.

"Perhaps I should." He agreed, nodding briefly before speaking yet again. "I will keep that in mind, next time I could get pepper-sprayed or something and that's the last thing I need." In reality pepper spray would do nothing but bother him, but she didn't need to know that. "Well, I just have this sort of talent that lets me know people without much trouble, but you're different, I cannot seem to do it with you." He explained to her, he wanted to tell her more but he couldn't, not without risking his secret at least.
He noticed the frown on her face, making his smile flatter a little. "I just find it comical how you say you're sorry for something that is obviously not your fault, it is rather amusing." He explained to her. She was really unique, that was a certain thing, he needed to hear her talk more, if he was unable to read her mind then he would get to know her the traditional way. Besides, the more time he spent with her, the more he would get used to that mouth-watering scent of hers and perhaps even form a friendship with her, but he couldn't get his hopes up.

Bella nodded her head a little with his statement. "Good." She said. "after all, it is very rude to sneak up on people." His next comment made her laugh a little bit. The thought of pepper spraying a fellow student in the cafeteria for sneaking up on her was kind of comical. Not that she even carried the pepper spray that her dad had given her, to school. Waving it off jokingly, Bella said, "Oh don't worry. I didn't bring it with me today." She grinned a little.
Bella raised her eyebrow as she spoke to her of having a "talent" for knowing people without much effort. Before she could even stop herself, Bella opened her mouth and spoke. "Oh. So besides being god-like beautiful, you are also very talented? How is that even fair to us normal, plain humans?" Once she heard the words out loud, her face blushed a brighter red than even before when she spoke something that she hadn't meant to. She tried to laugh it off and change the subject. "Well I am glad that I at least amuse you. I do tend to do that often with other people as well."
